Crowns in Torrance, CA

What are crowns?

A crown is a restorative procedure that is used to reestablish the integrity of a tooth damaged by decay or trauma by encasing the entire tooth above the gumline in a protective restoration. Additionally, it has the benefit of restoring the esthetic appearance of the tooth.

What can crowns be used to treat?

Crowns are a powerful and diverse restorative procedure that can used to improve the health and appearance of your smile by:

  • Protecting a weakened tooth
  • Covering a dental implant
  • Restoring a broken or worn tooth
  • Covering a tooth after root canal therapy
  • Changing the shape, color, or size of a tooth

What types of crowns are available?

You have options for your crown to fit your esthetic, budget, and health goals. Some of the most common types of crowns utilized at South Bay Prosthodontics include:

Precious metals

These crowns are usually made from a gold alloy and are favored due to their extremely high flexural strength and biocompatibility. Due to esthetic concerns, metal crowns are usually only placed on the rear molars.

Ceramics

Ceramic restorations can be created out of zirconia, porcelain, or other ceramic mixtures. Ceramic crowns have the benefit of being both strong and natural looking, making them better suited for applications on anterior teeth where esthetic appearances matter.

Porcelain fused to metal (PFM)

PFM crowns provide the strength and biocompatibility of metal restorations with the natural looking appearance of ceramic restorations.
