Esthetic Evaluations

You may have heard the term “smile makeover” to describe an individualized treatment plan that gives patients beautiful smiles by way of a series of cosmetic dentistry procedures. At South Bay Periodontics, we take oral health seriously and have the training and specialization to deliver exceptional quality that preserves and prioritizes your oral health.

What is an esthetic evaluation?

An esthetic evaluation is individualized cosmetic dentistry treatment plan that restores the appearance and function of your smile. At South Bay Periodontics, we never treat a tooth in isolation. Your oral health is dependent upon a complex system of tissues and structures working together in harmony. With every comprehensive treatment plan we design, we ensure that you get a beautiful smile while also retaining the integrity of your long-term oral health.

What can an esthetic evaluation correct?

Like most smile makeovers, our esthetic evaluations are intended to enhance the beauty of your smile. Unlike the treatment you’ll find elsewhere, our specialists can predict and prevent subsequent issues that may arise as a result of your treatment. As such, we can treat:

  • Discolored teeth
  • Crooked teeth
  • Missing teeth
  • Gapped teeth
  • Chipped or cracked teeth
  • Mishappen or uneven teeth
  • Uneven gum line (a gummy smile)
  • Replacing metal fillings or crowns

What procedures are part of a smile makeover?

After your consultation, your periodontist will recommend a combination of procedures to give you the smile that you deserve. The procedures that we recommend can include:

  • Teeth whitening
  • Dental crowns or bridges
  • Veneers
  • Dental implants

It’s imperative to remember that, at South Bay Periodontics, we never recommend a treatment that puts your long-term oral health at risk. That said, we may also recommend procedures that prevent issues that may do just that. Your dentist will speak with you candidly about your treatment plan to ensure that you understand what they are suggesting and why.

What should I expect from my consultation?

During your evaluation, one of our specialists will perform a detailed, comprehensive examination of your oral health and take a series of images and scans to accurately and precisely capture the data of your teeth and their positions. We do this through two primary methods:

  • Intraoral camera and scanner capture 3D digital images of your mouth allowing for precise digital reproduction of your smile
  • Digital x-rays and cone-beam CT scanner capture incredibly detailed and accurate images of jaw structure

Your South Bay periodontist will also have an in-depth conversation with you about your cosmetic and oral health goals. Smile design is as much an art as it is a science, and your prosthodontist will design you a beautiful smile that optimizes the long-term integrity of your oral health. In short, we not only treat cosmetic issues but prevent subsequent ones.

How long does it take to get a smile makeover?

The length of time that your treatments take are going to depend heavily on the state of your oral health and the specific treatments that your dentist prescribes. Upon committing to a treatment plan, your dentist will clearly convey how long treatment should take and what kind of results you can expect.

Depending upon the procedures used for your smile makeover you can expect to see a digital mock up, a wax-up, or both.

  • Wax-up: Created by taking an impression of your teeth, in-house lab will produce a 3D model of your new smile, allowing you to visualize and approve of treatments before they are finalized.
  • Digital mock-up: a computer generated simulations of your new smile that allows you to see digital images of your smile options

We create our wax-ups in our in-house lab

Who is a candidate for an esthetic evaluation?

The only way to be certain whether an esthetic evaluation, or smile makeover, is the right choice for you is by scheduling a comprehensive evaluation of your mouth. Generally, you must:

  • Be in overall good oral health
  • Have multiple cosmetic concerns
  • Have reasonable expectations for what can be achieved

For those with serious or structural issues or acute or chronic oral disease, your periodontist will recommend a full mouth rehabilitation.
